Travelling by bus on the Costa del Sol is one of the most affordable and comfortable ways to explore the region without a car. Although there is no direct bus from Málaga Airport to San Luis de Sabinillas, the journey is relatively easy thanks to good coastal connections through Marbella and Estepona.
Most travellers first take a direct airport coach from Málaga Airport to Marbella Bus Station, which is usually the fastest and most flexible connection with frequent departures throughout the day. From Marbella, local coastal buses continue towards Estepona, San Luis de Sabinillas, Puerto de la Duquesa and La Línea. Another popular option is changing buses in Estepona, which is closer to Sabinillas and offers simple local connections along the coast.
The full journey from Málaga Airport to Sabinillas generally takes around 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic and waiting times between buses. Modern coaches are usually air-conditioned and comfortable, making bus travel a good budget-friendly alternative compared to taxis or private airport transfers. During summer and holiday periods, it is recommended to check schedules in advance and allow extra time for connections.
Local buses are also very useful for exploring nearby towns without needing a car. Estepona can normally be reached from Sabinillas in around 20–30 minutes, while buses towards La Línea and the Gibraltar border usually take around 45–60 minutes. These routes are especially popular for shopping trips, beach visits or day excursions to Gibraltar.
Many visitors combine buses with local taxis, Uber or Bolt for the final part of the journey, especially when arriving late at night or travelling with larger luggage. While public transport on the Costa del Sol may take slightly longer than driving, it remains a scenic, practical and environmentally friendly way to travel along the Andalusian coastline.
Approximate travel times:
- Sabinillas → Estepona: 20–30 minutes
- Sabinillas → Marbella: 45–60 minutes
- Sabinillas → La Línea / Gibraltar border: 45–60 minutes
- Málaga Airport → Sabinillas (with transfer in Marbella or Estepona): around 2–3 hours
