Ronda – A Must-Visit Day Trip from the Costa del Sol
If you're looking for one of the most unforgettable places to visit during your holiday on the Costa del Sol, Ronda should be at the top of your list. Set high above the dramatic El Tajo Gorge, this historic mountain town combines spectacular scenery, rich history and authentic Andalusian charm in a way few places can match.
Located around an hour and a half from Málaga, Marbella, Estepona and Casares Costa, Ronda makes an excellent day trip for visitors wanting to explore inland Andalusia.
The Famous Puente Nuevo
Ronda's most iconic landmark is the magnificent Puente Nuevo, which spans the 120-metre-deep El Tajo Gorge. Completed in 1793 after more than 40 years of construction, the bridge connects the old Moorish quarter with the newer part of the town.
The views from the bridge are simply breathtaking, while several walking trails below offer spectacular photo opportunities looking back towards the bridge towering above the gorge.
Explore the Historic Old Town
Ronda's old town is filled with narrow cobbled streets, traditional whitewashed houses and beautiful churches dating back hundreds of years. As you wander through the historic centre, you'll discover hidden courtyards, peaceful gardens and charming cafés where life moves at a much slower pace.
The town's unique location has made it an important settlement for Romans, Moors and Christians alike, with each culture leaving its mark on Ronda's architecture and traditions.
Visit Spain's Oldest Bullring
Even if you're not interested in bullfighting, the Plaza de Toros de Ronda is worth visiting for its architectural beauty and historical importance. Opened in 1785, it is considered one of Spain's oldest and most prestigious bullrings and now houses an excellent museum explaining the history of bullfighting in Andalusia.
Incredible Viewpoints
One of the best things to do in Ronda is simply to admire the scenery. The town is surrounded by the Sierra de las Nieves mountains, vineyards and rolling countryside, while numerous viewpoints offer unforgettable panoramas over the gorge and surrounding landscape.
Sunset is an especially magical time to visit, when the golden light transforms the cliffs and stone buildings into one of southern Spain's most photogenic scenes.
Food and Local Specialities
Ronda is also a fantastic destination for food lovers. Enjoy traditional Andalusian dishes in restaurants overlooking the gorge, sample locally produced wines from the nearby vineyards, or relax with tapas in one of the town's picturesque squares.
Is Ronda Worth Visiting?
Absolutely. Whether you're passionate about history, photography, nature or simply want to experience one of Andalusia's most beautiful towns, Ronda offers something for everyone.
Its spectacular setting, fascinating history and relaxed atmosphere make it one of the most popular day trips from the Costa del Sol. If you're staying in Casares Costa, Sabinillas, Estepona, Marbella or Málaga, don't miss the opportunity to experience one of Spain's most iconic destinations.
