Gibraltar – One of the Best Day Trips from the Costa del Sol
Gibraltar is one of the most fascinating day trips from the Costa del Sol, offering a unique blend of British heritage, Mediterranean lifestyle and spectacular natural scenery. Located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, the Rock is famous for its towering limestone cliffs, fascinating military history and breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Spain, the Mediterranean Sea and, on clear days, the mountains of Morocco.
From 15 July 2026, visiting the Rock becomes even easier. Under the new UK–EU agreement, routine land border checks between Spain and Gibraltar are being removed, making it much quicker and more convenient to cross the frontier. Immigration checks for travellers arriving from outside the Schengen Area will instead take place at Gibraltar's airport and seaport, allowing pedestrians and vehicles to move freely across the land border. This makes Gibraltar one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from the Costa del Sol.
One of the easiest ways to visit Gibraltar is by driving to La Línea de la Concepción, the Spanish town located directly next to the border. Many visitors choose to park there and simply walk into Gibraltar, avoiding city traffic and the challenge of finding parking inside the territory. Walking into Gibraltar also lets you experience one of its most unusual attractions—the famous airport runway crossing, where pedestrians cross an active runway before entering the city.
Explore the Rock Your Way
Once inside Gibraltar, there are several excellent ways to discover the famous Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
Rock Taxi Tours
Traditional Rock Taxi Tours remain one of the most popular choices, taking visitors directly to Gibraltar's most famous attractions, including:
- St. Michael's Cave
- The Barbary Macaques (Europe's only wild monkeys)
- Skywalk
- Great Siege Tunnels
- Windsor Suspension Bridge
- Queen's Balcony
- spectacular viewpoints overlooking two continents
Local taxi drivers also provide fascinating commentary about Gibraltar's history, wildlife and military heritage, making the journey an experience in itself.
NEW – Electric Nature Reserve Shuttle
A brand-new fully electric Nature Reserve Shuttle now provides another excellent way to explore the Rock.
Introduced in 2026, this environmentally friendly shuttle transports visitors from Market Place directly to Queen's Balcony, providing convenient access to Gibraltar's main attractions within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
The shuttle:
- operates approximately every 30 minutes
- is fully electric and environmentally friendly
- is wheelchair accessible
- is suitable for families and visitors with reduced mobility
- includes admission to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve with the ticket
It is an excellent alternative for visitors who prefer not to hike the steep roads or take a taxi tour. The new shuttle service has been introduced while the Gibraltar Cable Car undergoes a major modernisation project.
Hiking the Rock
For more adventurous visitors, Gibraltar offers several scenic walking routes through the Nature Reserve. Although some paths are steep, they reward hikers with spectacular viewpoints, hidden military tunnels, Mediterranean flora and numerous opportunities to photograph the Rock from unique angles.
Cable Car Update
If you've visited Gibraltar before, you may remember taking the famous Cable Car to the summit. The Cable Car is currently closed for a complete refurbishment and is expected to reopen in 2027 with modernised facilities. Until then, visitors can comfortably reach the Upper Rock by taxi tour, the new electric shuttle or on foot. (House of Commons Library)
Discover Gibraltar's Town Centre
After exploring the Rock, head down to Main Street, where you'll find a charming blend of British shops, traditional pubs, cafés and international brands. Nearby Casemates Square, Ocean Village Marina and the waterfront offer a lively Mediterranean atmosphere with excellent restaurants and outdoor terraces.
English is the official language, the currency is the Gibraltar Pound (although Pounds Sterling are accepted almost everywhere), and visitors often enjoy the unique experience of stepping into a British Overseas Territory while remaining on the Iberian Peninsula.
Gibraltar also has an excellent public bus network connecting many attractions, including Europa Point, the beaches, Moorish Castle and the town centre, making it easy to explore without a car.
Duty-Free Shopping
Gibraltar is well known for its duty-free shopping, attracting visitors from Spain and across Europe.
Main Street is lined with shops selling:
- perfumes and cosmetics
- jewellery and watches
- electronics
- fashion
- spirits
- tobacco products
- popular British brands
Prices can often be lower than in neighbouring countries, although savings vary depending on exchange rates and customs allowances. Before making larger purchases, it's always worth checking the latest duty-free limits for your country.
A Day Trip You'll Never Forget
Whether you choose to explore on foot, join a traditional Rock Taxi Tour, ride the new electric Nature Reserve Shuttle or simply relax in the cafés and marinas, the Rock offers one of the most memorable excursions from the Costa del Sol.
With easier border crossings from 15 July 2026, spectacular scenery, fascinating history, famous Barbary macaques, stunning viewpoints and excellent shopping, there has never been a better time to discover Gibraltar.
